Hike to the top of Silver Peak, June 19, 2004

thumbnail Here is a nice bridge over the first waterfall, with Dan Crouse posing on it.
thumbnail Here is the same waterfall as seen from the bridge.
thumbnail Here is another, looking down.
thumbnail This is an adjacent mountain seen through the trees early on.
thumbnail Dan is taking a picture of a waterfall, and I'm taking a picture of him.
thumbnail Yet another waterfall.
thumbnail And another.  This one was particularly long.
thumbnail Here is the mountain ridge across the valley.
thumbnail The trilliums grew in a variety of hues, from pink, to lavender, to white, like these.
thumbnail Here is the forest that we were hiking through.
thumbnail The trail to Annette Lake had quite a few rocks and roots, but it was relatively good compared to what was to come.
thumbnail Here we see the beautiful Annette Lake, with its forest green color.  Notice the waterfall in the distance.
thumbnail This is one of the mountains that surround the lake.
thumbnail Another view of the lake shows the clear waters.
thumbnail Next, we start climbing to the top of Silver Peak.  There is no trail, just a steep, unending slope covered in rocks.
thumbnail This 45° scramble goes on for 1200 feet or more.
thumbnail Near the top there is some Indian Paintbrush.
thumbnail Atop the mountain, Dan the mountain goat.
thumbnail
thumbnail These pictures show the view from the top, starting with a shot of Mt. Rainer.  I made a panorama of it [4MB] using software that came with my little Nikon camera.  The software is made by ArcSoft.  After I finished with it I noticed there was a stitching mistake, where a couple adjacent photos didn't line up properly, but the misalignment doesn't appear in the preview.  If you want something closer to perfection and have a lot of patience to wait for the download, I also made a large panorama [60MB].

thumbnail Mount Catherine.
thumbnail I had to toss this one and the next out of the panorama set, since Dan moved.  But I took replacements after he got up, so there wasn't a gap.
thumbnail Dan is enjoying the view after we finished lunch.

thumbnail Dan's rucksack in the foreground.
thumbnail Here we overlook Annette Lake, an earlier waypoint.
thumbnail On the other side of Silver Peak is another lake.
thumbnail Here by accident is Dan's butt.
thumbnail In the upper middle of the photo is Interstate-90 going over Snoqualmie Pass.
thumbnail Alpine heather, Indian paintbrush, etc.
thumbnail Time to head down, which wasn't that much better than going up, due to the unstable rocks.
thumbnail Dan, leaving me in the dust, was relatively nimble on the rocks.  There is a reason why mountain goats don't wear size 15 shoes.
thumbnail Fungus among us.
thumbnail I had a wardrobe malfunction.  I was using almost new hiking
boots, which I guess weren't tight enough to deal with the rocks.
After the hike, I had about three water blisters, two blood blisters,
and two bruised toenails.
thumbnail The next two were taken 11 days after the hike.  The bruises and blood blisters are still present.
thumbnail The blisters have flattened and calloused.
