| Here is a nice bridge over the first waterfall, with Dan Crouse posing on it. | |
| Here is the same waterfall as seen from the bridge. | |
| Here is another, looking down. | |
| This is an adjacent mountain seen through the trees early on. | |
| Dan is taking a picture of a waterfall, and I'm taking a picture of him. | |
| Yet another waterfall. | |
| And another. This one was particularly long. | |
| Here is the mountain ridge across the valley. | |
| The trilliums grew in a variety of hues, from pink, to lavender, to white, like these. | |
| Here is the forest that we were hiking through. | |
| The trail to Annette Lake had quite a few rocks and roots, but it was relatively good compared to what was to come. | |
| Here we see the beautiful Annette Lake, with its forest green color. Notice the waterfall in the distance. | |
| This is one of the mountains that surround the lake. | |
| Another view of the lake shows the clear waters. | |
| Next, we start climbing to the top of Silver Peak. There is no trail, just a steep, unending slope covered in rocks. | |
| This 45° scramble goes on for 1200 feet or more. | |
| Near the top there is some Indian Paintbrush. | |
| Atop the mountain, Dan the mountain goat. | |
| These pictures show the view from the top, starting with a shot of Mt. Rainer. I made a panorama of it [4MB] using software that came with my little Nikon camera. The software is made by ArcSoft. After I finished with it I noticed there was a stitching mistake, where a couple adjacent photos didn't line up properly, but the misalignment doesn't appear in the preview. If you want something closer to perfection and have a lot of patience to wait for the download, I also made a large panorama [60MB]. | |
| Mount Catherine. | |
| I had to toss this one and the next out of the panorama set, since Dan moved. But I took replacements after he got up, so there wasn't a gap. | |
| Dan is enjoying the view after we finished lunch. | |
| Dan's rucksack in the foreground. | |
| Here we overlook Annette Lake, an earlier waypoint. | |
| On the other side of Silver Peak is another lake. | |
| Here by accident is Dan's butt. | |
| In the upper middle of the photo is Interstate-90 going over Snoqualmie Pass. | |
| Alpine heather, Indian paintbrush, etc. | |
| Time to head down, which wasn't that much better than going up, due to the unstable rocks. | |
| Dan, leaving me in the dust, was relatively nimble on the rocks. There is a reason why mountain goats don't wear size 15 shoes. | |
| Fungus among us. | |
| I had a wardrobe malfunction. I was using almost new hiking
boots, which I guess weren't tight enough to deal with the rocks. After the hike, I had about three water blisters, two blood blisters, and two bruised toenails. |
|
| The next two were taken 11 days after the hike. The bruises and blood blisters are still present. | |
| The blisters have flattened and calloused. |
